How tall is humphreys peak in arizona

Clear view. I brought micro-spikes but there was no need for them. My Sportivas did fine with the few icy patches present on trail.

I used the boulders to maneuver through those icy sections. I should of brought food! Thanks to the hiker at the summit who offered me a sandwich. Great hike. Crampons not needed. Hiked on October 28th. If you're thinking about hiking Humphreys before the snow piles up, now is the time and the time is now. There is slushy snow and a bit of ice between ' and ' And it will be windy and cold at the top : Cheers! Beautiful trail once you get up to the ridgeline.

Still made it to the top. Dramamine was a lifesaver. We went to the saddle and experienced a lot of black ice on our way back about 4pm. Overall, a great hike! Consider the altitude gain. It is a 6hrs 47minutes to the very top return hike including 1 hrs total of rest time during the hike. I read here that some people took 5hrs 30 minutes total and some even less??? I have serious doubt unless there are athletes Enjoy the ride. Great day for a summit!

Perfect weather and not too much ice on the trail. Close to perfect hiking experience in terms of views, terrain, and challenge.

Lightly trafficked on a Friday morning, encountered 20 other hikers over 6 six hours. First time hiking at this altitude, it takes a toll on you, final mile up took me 45 mins. Did this for first time today. Spectacular day minimal wind on top.

Slippery ice on trail under saddle but otherwise in good condition. Lost the trail on the way up after the saddle briefly but so grateful for the marker sticks further up.

It felt like it took forever to get above the tree line, and once you get there it's pretty hard to follow the trail. Also, that last mile before the summit was pretty demanding. I cannot stress enough to be aware of your surroundings as you are completely exposed. I didn't find the trail as difficult as I was expecting it to be, but only because the weather was on my side today.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to properly hydrate the night before, and the day of the hike to help decrease the altitude sickness. I probably wouldn't recommend this trail to first time hikers, but if you're down for the adventure Breathtaking hike, worth the hype.

Got there at a on a Tuesday, there were maybe a dozen cars parked at the base. Definitely snow and ice on the way up. Beautiful and slightly treacherous. I had basic hiking gear. Good shoes, no poles or crampons which would have helped for sure.

I made it to the top of mount Kachina in 3 hours. The view is spectacular and I gasped out loud at multiple points. Prepare to go slow and to give this hike time. I would get there at 7 next time. And I hope there is a next time because I want to complete this hike!

The altitude can be challenging for some if they are not properly acclimated. Started around 5am and was surprised at the amount of snow and ice the entire hike. We fell several times and called it about a mile from the top just for our safety. Definitely would recommend poles AND crampons based on the amount of ice up there. Trail was in great condition for this time of year.

Started at 7 am and put on spikes for a short stretch in the trees. Above tree line, not a lot of snow and the day was gorgeous! Hike was pretty easy. Extremely tough hike but well worth the reward to the peak. Descending is brutal on the feet and knees. Strongly suggest hiking poles. Here you are firmly reminded of the fact that you are on the rim of an extinct volcano, looking down into its crater. You can just about see the true peak, but take note of how the ridge undulates up to the summit.

Also here is a trail junction, make sure you go left up the ridge. The species of trees up here is the bristlecone pine, which in some regions grow to be thousands of years old. Continue on the path through these resolute figures, staying on the left side of the ridge.

Among the final trees, and above them, there are wooden poles marking the trail at varying intervals. If in doubt, stay left and scan ahead for the next post. You will encounter a few small dips, but the trail is mostly up, up, up the rest of the way. Take small breaks to enjoy the view, try not to be discouraged by the false summits , and pay attention to your breathing.

Around five miles and a quarter from the trailhead, you will find yourself standing at the top of Arizona! Registration for the summer challenge runs between April 1 and September Be sure to check out the winter challenge , too! Road trips and collecting high points are my main motive.

I grew up in New Jersey, discovered hiking while living in North Carolina, and have been based in Southern California since I love everything from hiking well maintained, popular trails in the Southwest to mountaineering less accessible peaks. Your email address will not be published.
